An article I wrote during my internship at iBuild Building Solutions (Melbourne).

Designing your own home is a journey full of excitement and occasional complications. To help you maximise the once in a lifetime opportunity to design your dream home, we have consolidated a few important tips that are bound to be useful in the process. iBuild offers more than 50 home designs. Every single home built is unique due to the flexibility iBuild offers with a wide range of standard choices at no extra cost!

1. Keep a notebook with dividers:

Instead of trying to keep track of the notes on your phone and rummaging through your bag for multiple pieces of scrap paper, keeping a single notebook with all the information regarding the planning of the house will make the process much simpler. Use one divider for each room of the house plus cost calculations in order to find what you’re looking for easily.

2. Plan your home:

Make a list of what you want your dream home to look like. From the external appearance all the way to the internal layout of the house, it speeds up the design process if you have an idea of a home you would love to wake up to every morning. Creating a sketch of the layout would help heaps with choosing the right floorplan. If you want to update your plan by a notch, you could recreate your plan online using a 3D imaging software like Home Designer Suite. Feel free to include more detailed preferences like natural lighting, type of insulation, room sizes, height of ceiling and more.

3. Consider your requirements:

It is important to remember how many people of which age groups will live in the house, in order to determine exactly what kind of home you’ll need. For couples starting a family, a home with three or more rooms might be more suitable than a two-bedroom home. For instance, areas like a big kitchen, study and garage are more important to some than they are to others.

4. List your essentials:

Make a list of the appliances and furniture you want to include in each room. Be as detailed as you want and remember to specify to the builder if you want any in-built appliances or furniture. This is one of the main steps that help make your home unique to your personal style. Express yourself through your home!

5. Design your chef’s haven:

The kitchen is easily the favourite place in the home for food-lovers. Customise your kitchen with your own hand-picked furniture from your local Bunnings store! With a budget provided to you, feel free to pick anything that suits your cooking style and aesthetic. Even if it exceeds the budget, you can always choose to top up the difference in price.
